Traditional Irish-American Trio

Little Flower House Concert #33

At the October 2022 house concert, guests enjoyed a performance by Poor Man’s Gambit. This traditional Irish-American folk trio is from Philadelphia, PA. They stopped through on their tour to play for us and it was such a treat! This is the first time this genre of music was performed at the house concert and it’s always nice to have a unique variety of styles, performers, and instruments. Their acoustic sound was peaceful and rhythmic. It was the perfect sound for this pleasant autumn evening. Their tunes had guests tapping their toes and at times even got folks clapping to the rhythm.

The members of Poor Man’s Gambit are very talented and well-studied in Irish music. They switched between playing a variety of instruments during the house concert. Corey Purcell was on button accordion, cittern, bodhran, and vocals. Deirdre Lockman was on fiddle and vocals. And, Zac Léger on guitar, flute, and vocals. This group played several traditional compositions and also tunes they had written. I think everyone was surprised to hear the very familiar tune, Imagine by John Lennon… “You may say I’m a dreamer. But I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us. And the world will be as one.” It became a nice sign-along with almost all of the house concert guests participating. How lovely!

“My band (Poor Man’s Gambit) played the Little Flower House Concert in Indianapolis in October, 2022. As an artist, you’re never quite sure what you’re walking into as each house concert is unique, but the Little Flower House Concert Series was fantastic! Kati was incredibly hospitable, and had a great place setup for us to perform. The audience was very friendly, and it was a truly fantastic evening. I would highly recommend the Little Flower House Concert Series to fellow artists looking for a cool spot to play in Indianapolis and folks looking for an intimate concert!” says bandleader Corey Purcell.

It was a beautiful night for an outdoor concert.

This mid-October house concert happened to fall on the night of the Hunter’s Full Moon and it was a beautiful night. While it’s hard to get a photo of the moon, if you missed this concert, maybe you can imagine this big beautiful orangish moon rising to greet everyone as they left. It didn’t get chilly till the last song at the end of the night. There was a little fire going to keep everyone warm. It really was the perfect evening and weather. Since it will likely be the last outdoor house concert of 2022, it was so nice to enjoy the sunset and moonrise outside with friends, neighbors, and great music!

Traditional Irish dance?

It is probable that this group will pass back through Indianapolis in the future to dance for us! Both Corey and Deirdre are accomplished dancers and have participated in competitive Irish dancing. It gives us something to look forward to the next time they are here. Make sure you’re subscribed to get invites to Little Flower House Concerts so you don’t miss it!
